Mahadev Mela 2025

The Mahadev Mela—especially the celebrated Bhavnath Mahadev Fair at Girnar in Junagadh—is one of Gujarat’s most ancient and vibrant Shiva festivals. Here’s a historical overview and context behind its origins and traditions:

Historical Origins & Mythology

  • The Bhavnath Mahadev Temple at the foothills of Mount Girnar is believed to house a self-manifested Shiva linga. Legend holds that when Shiva and Parvati traveled across Girnar, Parvati’s divine garment fell near what is now the Mrigi Kund, blessing it as a sacred site

  • According to Skanda Purana lore, the place is also known as Vastra-Putakshetra—”where the garment fell”—granting mythic importance to the site.

Significance & Rituals

  • The fair opens on Magha Vad Bha–Ekadashi and concludes on Magha Vad Amavasya, culminating at midnight on Maha Shivaratri. Thousands of devotees gather to witness the grand Mahapuja and midnight worship of Lord Shiva

  • A highlight is the Naga Sadhu procession: naked ascetics seated on elephants, blowing conch shells (turis) and carrying flags. They perform sacred rituals and take a midnight bath in the Mrigi Kund, symbolizing purification and spiritual elevation.
