Iconic Tales of Shiva’s Valor & Power
1. Destruction of the Three Cities (Tripurantaka)
Shiva destroyed the three invincible demon cities (Tripura) with a single arrow when they aligned in the sky. Riding a celestial chariot with Brahma and using the masses god Vishnu as his arrow, Shiva annihilated the cities in one potent strike—earning the name “Tripurantaka.”

2. Swallowing the Halahala Poison (Neelakanth)
During the cosmic churning (Samudra Manthan), a deadly poison emerged that threatened all of creation. Shiva drank it to save the universe, his wife Parvati pressed his throat so the poison stayed there—turning it blue and giving him the name Neelakanth.

3. Burning of Kamadeva
When the god of love, Kama, tried to disrupt Shiva’s meditation, Shiva opened his third eye and burned him to ashes. This act highlights Shiva’s unwavering discipline and zero tolerance for distraction.
4. Rescue of Markandeya from Death (Kalari)
Yama, the god of death, tried to claim the young devotee Markandeya. Shiva emerged from the linga and struck down Yama to save him. He is worshiped as “Kalari” for being the vanquisher of death.
5. Vanquishing Gajasura, Andakasura, Brahma’s Head Cut, & Jalandhara
Shiva’s heroic deeds include slaying multiple demons:
- Gajasura, the elephant demon at Vazhuvur
- Andakasura, slain and impaled at Thirukkovilur
- Punishing Brahma by removing one of his heads
- Killing Jalandhara with his chakra (discus)

6. Dance of Destruction (Tandava) and Birth of Veerabhadra
Overcome with grief and anger after Sati’s self-immolation, Shiva performed the fierce Tandava, from which Veerabhadra emerged to destroy Daksha’s sacrilegious sacrifice.
